Thermal treatment is the process of heating and cooling metal in its solid state under specific conditions to alter its mechanical properties. While the chemical composition remains unchanged, the result is a hardened surface with a ductile core—ideal for durability and performance.

Why Is Thermal Treatment Important?

Many metal products require thermal treatment before use. These include bolts, bushings, and automotive steel components with simple geometries. The process enhances production efficiency and significantly improves product quality.

Types of Thermal Treatments We Offer

Neutral Hardening

In neutral hardening, we use a nitrogen-rich atmosphere with small amounts of hydrocarbons—such as LP or natural gas (we use endothermic atmosphere). Once the part reaches austenitization, it is quenched in a severe medium like water, oil, or brine (we use oil). The hardening level depends on the carbon content and the transformation from austenite to martensite. The atmosphere must protect the surface from oxidation and prevent decarburization (carbon loss).

Carburizing

Carburizing is one of the oldest methods for surface hardening steel parts. The metal is exposed to a carbon-rich atmosphere, promoting absorption and diffusion of carbon into the surface. This process creates a hard outer layer while maintaining a softer core—ideal for wear resistance. The endothermic atmosphere protects the steel from oxidation and supplies sufficient carbon for surface enrichment. Once the desired carbon penetration is achieved, the part is quenched or normalized.

Carbonitriding

Carbonitriding is a gaseous surface-hardening process where steel is heated in an atmosphere that allows simultaneous absorption of carbon and nitrogen, forming an extremely hard surface layer. The atmosphere includes a carrier gas enriched with natural gas, methane, or propane (carbon source), and ammonia (nitrogen source). The diffusion occurs between 815°C and 870°C, followed by oil quenching to reduce distortion and cracking risk. Typical layer thickness ranges from 0.15 to 0.40 mm, achieved in ½ to 3 hours at 815°C.

Annealing

Annealing reduces internal stresses and softens steel for machining. The process involves heating the steel above its critical temperature (depending on the type) and allowing it to cool slowly in a closed furnace or insulated medium like ash, lime, or asbestos. Slow, uniform heating is essential, so we use furnaces with precise temperature control. If exact temperature measurement isn’t possible, we estimate based on material coloration during heating.
